I’m not sure it is this binary. Are we ever 100% off? I’m constantly observing and thinking and pondering and accepting inputs and stimuli which might not be related to a task at hand, but generates new thinking and connected ideas. Equally, the idea that we are 100% focussed on a task is also unlikely, and dangerous. Prioritise yes, create focus, yes – but don’t fool yourself into thinking that binary on/off is achievable or desirable. The best ideas come in the shower on on a long walk, not when you’re focussed on the task at hand. Be more open to fluidity.
